(If you are not a map person, there are written directions following the maps.)

North Central West Virginia

Step 1: Find west Virginia!

Head south from Morgantown if you are coming from Baltimore.

Step 2: Find Interstate 79 and head toward Exit 99.

If you go east on Rt. 33 you'll find the Wal-Mart and Comfort Inn.

Step 3: Head west on US Route 33 at Weston/Exit 99.

You'll pass a cement bridge on the left and see a wooden sign on the right pointing the way to Vadis and Midway VFD.

Step 4: Travel approximately 17 miles and look for Vadis Road on your right.

If you get to the steel bridge you are only a couple hundred feet from our house.

Step 5: Travel around 2 miles on Vadis/Fink Creek Road until you see the Midway Fire Department.

For those of you who are map impaired here are written directions from Baltimore:

  • The first part of the trip is very straight forward: Take I-70 west toward Cumberland. Well past Frederick, you will encounter signs for I-68, toward Morgantown, WV. The exit for I-68 is on the left, so watch out for that.
  • Once on I-68, continue to head toward Morgantown. As you are approaching Morgantown you will see signs for I-79 SOUTH. The path toward I-79 SOUTH will also be on the leftmost or a 'Y' fork in I-68.
  • Once you are on I-79 SOUTH you will continue for around 45 miles or so, to Exit 99, which will lead you to US-33 WEST.
  • The exit from I-79 will circle you around to the north again and deposit you at a STOP sign. Make a left at the STOP and you will be going WEST on US-33.
  • Almost exactly 17 miles from the left turn onto US-33 is where you will turn RIGHT onto Vadis Road. (You will first have driven through much of Weston, innumerable small towns that are really only signs. Just stay on US-33.)
  • At about 16 miles from the turn you want to start looking for a large, single-arch, CEMENT BRIDGE on the left side of the road. As you sight that bridge your right turn onto Vadis Road is coming up quickly on the right. (another landmark is a wooden, state-park-like, sign that identifies the Midway VFD and Vadis as being "2 miles" up the road.
  • Approximately 1.7 miles after you make the right turn onto Vadis Road, which IS marked with a sign, you will encounter a "T" intersection marked with a large, orange LEFT arrow. Follow the arrow's advice, and you will still be on Vadis Road.
  • Approximately .4 mile further and you will find yourself at a STOP sign. Please stop there and look straight ahead. You will see the lovely, post-industrial Midway VFD hall.
  • When traffic allows, continue straight through the STOP sign, across the ever so sturdy, steel girder bridge.
  • We are, as you will I am sure remember, right behind the VFD
  • Should you get lost, don't bother trying to use your cell phone. Rather, stop and ask anyone where the Midway VFD is and they will get you where you need to be.
  • Should you find yourself on a gravel, ever-narrowing road AND hear a solitary banjo playing. Be afraid. Be VERY afraid and back out the way you came... Just kidding about the last part. You can't swing a dead (roadkilt) deer without hitting someone who plays a banjo, guitar or mandolin!!!
